Youth Highlight: Maia

Maia’s Inspiring Journey with the Navigate Program

At the heart of the Navigate program lies the belief that with the right support and guidance, every young individual can overcome adversity and reach their fullest potential. Maia’s story is a testament to this philosophy, showcasing the transformative power of the Navigate program in shaping young lives. At just 17, Maia faced daunting challenges. But with determination and the help of her Resource Navigator, Olivia Goodheart, Maia was able to get set on a path of remarkable growth.

Maia’s journey with Navigate commenced at a time when life seemed to be presenting insurmountable obstacles. Living out of her car and disengaged from school, she was determined to turn her life around. The first milestone was completing her GED, and Maia worked relentlessly towards this goal. The unwavering support she received from her Resource Navigator became the cornerstone of her transformation.

Maia’s involvement in Connected Lane County events like Wonder Wednesdays, Elevate Job Shadows, Wonder Week, and DevNW Youth Financial Foundation classes showcased her eagerness to learn and grow. Even before joining Navigate, she had participated in Invention Lab, proving her dedication to personal development. These experiences fostered a sense of empowerment within her, laying the foundation for future accomplishments.

With the Navigate program’s assistance, Maia’s life began to take a positive turn. She participated in the DevNW IDA matched savings program, allowing her to save up for her first car. Access to food stamps and health insurance significantly improved her living situation, providing stability and a sense of security. Now with her basic needs met, Maia could focus wholeheartedly on her career aspirations.

Maia’s hard work and determination paid off in abundance. Through her work experience at the Cottage Grove Chamber of Commerce, she displayed exceptional skills and dedication, leading to an internship opportunity. The experience not only bolstered her confidence but also provided valuable insights into her chosen career path. Today, she stands tall as a Division Support Specialist with LCOG, a testament to her ambition and drive. Maia is also attending Lane Community College part-time and has achieved the significant milestone of securing her own apartment.
