Adaptive Recreation Services provides year-round, community-based recreational, social, and educational programs for youth and adults with disabilities. Adaptive Recreation is a dynamic team environment where staff of all backgrounds and a variety of knowledge and education can provide experiences that enhance the quality of life for people with disabilities.

Program instructors are responsible for developing and leading activity-based programs based upon the philosophy and best practices of the therapeutic recreation field. Program offerings include but are not limited to fitness and wellness classes, social and functional skill building, social outings, day trips, and special events.

Employment Site(s): Hilyard Community Center.

Hours: Approximately 2-19 hours/week. Schedule may include weekends and evenings. Potentially up to 35-40 hours/week in the summer.

Salary:

Instructor 2 Temp: $13.00 – $18.20 hourly

Instructor 3 Temp: $14.15 – $24.06 hourly

Examples of Duties Performed – Duties may include but are not limited to the following

 

In addition to the full scope of duties of the Instructor 2 Temp or Instructor 3 Temp , duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

 

Participates in the process of creating, planning, implementing, and evaluating programs.
Provides preparation and clean-up for programs
Attends and completes trainings as required.
Works cooperatively with staff, participants, care providers, and community partner agencies.
Provides documentation to supervisors on program attendance, budget, staff and volunteer hours.
Supports intern and volunteer development in program planning and facilitation.
Monitors facility and patron safety and adapted equipment; reports issues or concerns to supervisor.
Provides exceptional customer service, in person and on the phone, while working with diverse patrons.
Represents the City government in a community center setting.
Follows procedures and policies as set by the City.
Supports and respects diversity in the workplace. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Some positions may be required to drive 15-passenger bus equipped with wheelchair lifts.
In addition, due to federal regulations related to door-to-door transport service, some positions may require additional training and/or alcohol and drug testing.
Performs related and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

 

Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the job. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

 

Knowledge of:

Foundational knowledge of therapeutic recreation including philosophy of community recreation and inclusion.
The nature and etiology of physical, mental, and/or emotional disabilities and their potential impact upon an individual’s ability to engage in recreational activities.
Skill in:

Adapting recreational activities and equipment to meet the needs of people with various disabilities.
Facilitating recreational activities including an understanding of group dynamics, individual needs and providing an inclusive and supportive environment.
Ability to:

Work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.
Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Work in cooperation with staff and the public.
Assess risk and maintain safety for programs and patrons.
Facilitate programs and provide professional customer service with minimal supervision.
Work within the policies and guidelines set by the City.
Minimum Requirements

Experience and/or training in therapeutic recreation and/or experience with people with disabilities, or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job.

 

License / Certificate

Current First Aid/CPR or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
Food Handlers certificates or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
Some positions may require a valid Oregon driver’s license or, the ability to obtain by date of hire. Applicant must pass driving records check and, if hired, maintain a driving record that meets the City’s standard. Oregon law requires that an out-of-state license holder must obtain a valid Oregon license (with appropriate endorsements) within 30 days of becoming domiciled in the state (ORS 803.355).
Must be 18 years or older.Must pass criminal background check.

Selection Process
Applicants are screened based upon their relevant knowledge, abilities, skills, experience, and training. The selection process varies according to the position and can include such things as screening of supplemental questionnaires, written or skill tests, ability or fitness tests, interviews, and assessment processes. In addition, background investigations and records checks may be required. Some positions also require applicants to have a psychological evaluation and/or physical examination and a drug test prior to employment.
