General Statement of DutiesThe City of Eugene Library, Recreation, & Cultural Services Department’s Aquatic’s Program provides accessible municipal aquatic environments. Aquatics program staff are responsible for maintaining safe practices and conditions in this environment, including supervision of aquatic activities and the participants involved.

The following positions will be filled from this job posting:

Lifeguard: $12.75 – $14.66 hourly

Location: Echo Hollow Pool: 1655 Echo Hollow Road – open all year (position may rotate to other locations as needed)

Hours: Approximately 6-15 hours/week with additional hours available during high use/summer months. Schedule may include weekends and evenings.

Examples of Duties Performed – Duties may include but are not limited to the following

LIFEGUARD

Responsible for the safety and enjoyment of patrons and staff; provides aquatics recreation classes; enforces safety rules, maintains facilities, and supports aquatics recreation management with effectively managing the daily facility operations and activities.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
Receives supervision from Pool Manager or Recreation Programmer.
Receives lead direction from Head Lifeguard.

Duties:Provide lifeguarding services for assigned classes and activities, including swimming, fitness, adaptive recreation and outdoor recreation classes and special events; and provides instruction in the proper use of equipment and the facilities.
Enforces pool safety rules and regulations; prevents and responds to emergencies; and render first aid including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and administer oxygen as needed.
Maintains assigned facilities; provides general custodial duties and reports needed repairs or safety hazards promptly to a higher classification.
Interacts with patrons by responding to inquiries and questions; creates and completes reports; and supports administrative staff with registration and front desk duties.
Being alert to indicators of child and elder abuse and neglect, and report suspected incidents to a supervisor.
Actively supports and respects diversity in the workplace.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
AQUATICS INSTRUCTORS

Plans, leads, and oversees recreational and/or specialized classes or activities designed for a specific target audience; and creates course outline and provides instruction for fitness, educational instruction, music, arts, dance, sports and athletics, health and wellness, personal enrichment, cooking, or gardening classes.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
Receives supervision from a higher classification or supervisor.
Functions as on-going lead worker over lower level classifications, volunteers and temporary employees

Duties required at all instructor levels:Develops course outline and designs class instruction for program to meet stated objectives and recreation practices in assigned area; and responsible for program/class atmosphere that promotes and encourages inclusion and provides a positive experience for patrons.
May be responsible for program activity area or classroom set –up and clean-up; may clean and put away equipment; identifies material and equipment needs and may purchase supplies as needed.
Attends orientation meetings; and participates in in-service training and staff meetings as requested.
Interacts with the patrons and develop good public relations with staff and the public; may assist in promoting and marketing of recreation activities; and responds to written and verbal questions regarding the activities.
Confirms all participants are registered and maintains accurate attendance records; completes reports; distributes program evaluations forms to participants; and reviews feedback and utilizes information to make recommendations to improve and enhance the program instruction.
Enforces safety rules and regulation; may need to respond to emergencies and administer first aid; and report all incidents/accidents immediately.
Being alert to indicators of child and elder abuse and neglect, and report suspected incidents to a supervisor.
May assist with managing and supervising facilities operations.
May assist in training volunteers and assistants.
Actively supports and respects diversity in the workplace.
Depending on Adaptive Recreation job assignment, may require driving a para-transit van, including the proper use of a wheelchair lift system, assisting passengers with boarding/exiting, and proper handling of their medical equipment and supplies.
Performs other related duties as assigned.

American Red Cross Lifeguard Training and First Aid Certification
Possession at time of hire or ability to obtain before work begins:American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer Certification
Preventing Disease Transmission Certification (ore equivalent Blood Borne Pathogens certification)
Preferred:American Red Cross Automated External Defibrillation Certification
American Red Cross Oxygen Administration for the Professional Rescuer Certification
AQUATICS INSTRUCTORS

Some job assignments require driving of City vehicles. Drivers need to be 18 years of age, pass an Oregon Motor Vehicle Department driving record check, have a valid Oregon Driver’s License, and pass a City of Eugene Driver Orientation.

Instructor 1- Aquatics
Minimum Requirements: Responsible for maintaining safe practices and conditions in a municipal aquatic environment; supervision of aquatic activities and the participants involved. Current First Aid and CPR certificates. American Red Cross or Ellis certification preferred, but not required. Basic group management skills.

Instructor 2 – Aquatics
Minimum Requirements: Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job.  Fitness instructors without United States Water Fitness Association (USWFA) or American Exercise Association (AEA) certification; Lifeguards or Head Guards with Lifeguard Instructor certification; and Swim Instructors with at least 300 hours of swim lesson instruction. Current First Aid and CPR certificates. American Red Cross or Ellis certification preferred, but not required. Moderate group management skills.

Instructor 3 – Aquatics
Minimum Requirements: Nationally recognized fitness certification. Current First Aid and CPR certificates. National Arthritis Foundation, USWFA or AEA certification. Advanced group management skills
